New funding opportunity for small and medium-sized towns in Eastern Europe: Building community across generations through media literacy
The European Commission has published a new funding opportunity calling for projects that connect different generations around the theme of media literacy in rural areas and small to medium towns with a population of under 50,000 in Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Cyprus.
The call aims to build trust across generations, as a building block of resilient democracy in the face of profound demographic and social challenges. It also seeks to provide participants with guidance and tools to raise media literacy skills for people of all ages.
The aim of the awarded projects should be to involve at least two demographic groups (children and young people, adults, and older people) in meaningful joint activities on the theme of media literacy in a trusted local space: These spaces are public (e.g. library or community centre) or semi-public (e.g. care home, school) settings within a community where community members feel safe and respected and are comfortable meeting, engaging with each other, and discussing different topics.
Eligible beneficiaries for the call include non-profits, care providers, but also municipal authorities in Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Cyprus. The call is open for application from 12 December 2025 to 6 February 2026: It will support one project in each country for a period of eight months with 50,000 euros.
