Mobile connectivity playbook for cities

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) has developed a playbook addressing the challenges of 5G network deployment in urban environments. While most European cities already have extensive 5G coverage through existing macrocell towers, growing data demand is straining current infrastructure. The use of mmWave 5G, which could greatly expand capacity, is often impractical with traditional macrocells, making network densification essential.

The playbook outlines a new, collaborative approach to urban network design, encouraging city governments and mobile operators to work together in reusing or installing street-level assets for more efficient 5G rollout. It presents a lifecycle framework and practical tools to help operators enhance network performance cost-effectively, while enabling cities to advance their digital agendas and manage public infrastructure responsibly.
