Greek Cities in the new Digital Age
As part of the Support Services for EU Smart communities, the European Commission has the goal to “Increase Digitalisation Awareness and Readiness of EU Communities”. The aim of this initiative is to support EU communities at the early stages or that have not yet begun their digital transformation journey by providing resources, best practices, and training to develop digital strategies.
Sustainable City is contributing to this initiative as a member of the Smart Communities Network: the network of networks endorsed by the European Commission, whose primary goal is to involve all EU local communities in the European green and digital transformation.
On 7 March 2025, with the support of a consortium of organisations, Sustainable City held a hybrid dissemination session to engage with their cities and local communities and enhance the awareness and preparedness of Greek communities in their digital and green transition journey.
Above you can find the presentation that was displayed during the session (in Greek).

As a follow-up to this hybrid event, the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and the Sustainable City Organisation from Greece are jointly organising a two-day online training event on the digital transformation of Local Authorities, titled:
"Greek and Cypriot Cities in the New Digital Era", on May 26 and 27, 2025, starting at 10:30 a.m. (EEST).
This training is organised within the framework of the activities of the European Network of Smart Communities, and follows recent in-person information events held in Greece and Cyprus. These aimed to raise awareness around local digital twins, European networks in the field of digitisation, and tools available for the digital transformation of European municipalities. As a continuation of those efforts, this joint online event will take a more practical approach to the subject.
The training is part of the European Commission’s initiative: "Raising awareness and readiness of European communities for digital transformation", which is supported by members of the European Network of Smart Communities.
The event targets staff working in local and regional authorities, including:
- Strategic and urban planning officers
- Sustainability and digital transformation managers
- Smart Cities, ICT, and innovation specialists
- Data and communications managers
- Officers for international relations, procurement, and funding
By participating in this training, you will:
