Opportunity for cities and regions: Call for applications for generic Top-Level Domains in 2026
In April 2026, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will open a new round of application for generic Top-Level Domains (TLDs).
Top-Level Domains are the last part of a domain name after the final dot, making up the URL of a web address (for example ".eu"). Generic Top-Level Domains include geoTLDs, which represent geographical areas that are not countries (some examples of geoTLDs currently in use include .berlin, .amsterdam, .alsace, .cat).
When the new ICANN call for application opens in April 2026, European cities, regions and territories will have the chance to apply for their own geoTLD. Managing their own domain extension can be an asset for municipalities and regions interested in strengthening their brand and developing their online identity, in line with their local development priorities and strategies.
Please note that under the call, TLDs will be attributed on a first-come-first-serve basis: This means that European cities and regions will potentially compete with homonyms in other parts of the world for the same geoTLD. More information will be available on the ICANN website.
