The goal of MÖSZ has been to represent, present and protect Hungarian local government interests since its establishment in 1990. The association participates in the consultation forums provided for local government interest associations and prescribed by law, and conducts exchanges of views in partnership with their members and cooperating partners, local government officials, on issues important to local governments. The Association's priority is to organise and support professional municipal forums and events, facilitating dialogue and consultation between municipal and sectoral actors.

MÖSZ is committed to the development and modernisation of Hungarian self-governments. As part of this, there is a growing emphasis on the development of smart cities, where digital technologies, innovative services and sustainable solutions can improve the quality of life of citizens and make city management more efficient. MÖSZ serves as an active forum for sharing good practices and facilitating cooperation between member municipalities in areas such as: Digital public services development, Energy efficiency and environmentally aware urban management, Smart transport, data-driven decision making, Public communication and community engagement through digital tools. The aim of the association is to provide a platform for municipalities to learn about new technologies and to facilitate professional dialogue between key players in smart city development - municipalities, universities, businesses. Energy efficiency, green energy, digitalisation have recently been in the spotlight, and the PSI has organised a number of forums and conferences on this topic for leaders of professional partners and municipalities, in cooperation with other professional institutes and associations. Their partners include professionals who are particularly concerned with the link between smart communication and smart city concepts. For them, the role of digital communication in the functioning of modern, service-oriented municipalities is particularly important. These solutions facilitate a fast, efficient and transparent dialogue with citizens, support decision-making processes and contribute to the digitalisation of urban services and sustainable urban development.
