Destination Earth is a new EU initiative aiming to develop a highly accurate digital model, a digital twin, of the Earth to monitor and simulate natural and human activity in order to develop and test scenarios as well as to anticipate environmental disasters and their impact for an evidence based policy and decision-making. The European Commission and the three international organisations entrusted with the implementation of the initiative (the European Space Agency-ESA, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts-ECMWF and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites-EUMETSAT), will be leveraging on EU’s substantial investments in research and related digital infrastructures, like Copernicus, and bringing together European scientific and industrial excellence to achieve the ambitious objectives of the initiative.
