The Open & Agile Smart Cities & Communities (OASC) network is proud to host its annual Summit on the 3rd and 4th of June 2024 in Rotterdam! This year’s theme, connecting local digital ecosystems through interoperability, highlights our commitment to support cities and local communities to collaborate on digital transformation via the fluent sharing of data in and between cities and local communities. We’ll look into the strategies, processes and technologies that can help cities to do that.

The main goal is to align as many cities as possible into that philosophy and concept and help cities to overcome the hurdles that block them from interoperability.

The essence of interoperability

Interoperability is the basic pillar for digital transition. It is not only about the mere technical capability of different systems to communicate, it reflects the organisational cooperation, a shared mindset for innovation and collaboration and the smooth exchange of information. It encompasses the conceptual aspect, the method and strategy and software & operational facets.

Global and local perspectives, from the strategic to the operational and technical level

Our Summit explores the different layers of interoperability and scrutinizes what is needed for a city or local community to take steps in the field of data and knowledge sharing and communicating systems.

General Assembly where we will formally approve the update version of the MIMs
Keynote speakers and demonstrations of practical use cases in the field of sustainable mobility, procurement strategies and health care
Interactive sessions where other tools such as a digital roadmap, digital assessment tool and much more will be discussed!
Endless networking opportunities!

Topics:

A dive into the global and European political landscape where legal frameworks and initiatives that shape the digital playing field are coined.
Dissection of the processes required at the local level to facilitate interoperability. It’s about a mindset, skills and transversal thinking that are essential for overcoming hurdles.
Explore the available technologies that can assist cities and local communities, regardless of their digital maturity, in advancing towards interoperability.
Highlight our Minimal Interoperability Mechanisms (MIMs), as the minimal but sufficient ground for interoperability that cities, companies, researchers and governments can use when procuring and using digital tools and systems

Summit Dinner on June 3

We are also hosting a dinner at Euromast, one of Rotterdam's most known attractions, on the evening of June 3. All Summit attendees are invited to the dinner free of charge. However, please be aware that seating is limited, and we can only accommodate up to 70 guests. To secure your seat at the dinner, we recommend registering early to guarantee your spot.

Exciting news for Dutch municipalities! You are invited to an extended workshop designed for Dutch cities and communities on January 17th at the OASC conference in Rotterdam. This event marks the debut of the first EU Local Digital Twins initiative.

This gathering serves as a pivotal moment steering the sustainable digital development journey of local municipalities and communities across the Netherlands. Supported by the European Commission, this initiative opens doors for Dutch municipalities to connect with EU organisations dedicated to sustainable local digitalisation. It serves as an early gateway to crucial tools, funding opportunities, and insights into EU policies. Engage with fellow municipalities, associations, and initiatives to exchange invaluable best practices in your digitalisation journey.

The European initiative comprises two essential parts, with hybrid events and training sessions planned across all EU member states. For the Netherlands, this workshop on January 17th signifies the start. Subsequently, an even more comprehensive online training session will delve deeper into your city's digital journey and how the EU can assist. Stay tuned for the updated agenda.

Participation in this event expands your network, fostering collaborations to co-create innovative digital tools like the Local Digital Twins Toolbox. Additionally, it is an opportunity to enhance existing tools such as LORDIMAS, essential in evaluating a local community's digital maturity. This project, detailed in the Digital Europe Work Programme 2021-2022, falls under the European Commission's Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content, and Technology (DG CNECT). Its primary objective is to elevate awareness and readiness across EU communities in every Member state.

Together with the City of Rotterdam we invite you to the OASC "Become Better Connected" conference of January 2024. This conference will shed new light on the recalibration and strengthening of the OASC-network and will also highlight the interesting developments going on in Rotterdam, the new coordinator of the Council of Cities.

Our global network serves as a steadfast partnership for cities and communities of all sizes worldwide, committed to guiding them on their path to digital transformation. On our way to achieve this, we firmly believe in the importance of close collaboration and nurturing a robust network. That is why recalibrating and strengthening the network will be a central theme during this conference. We invite you to be an integral part of this transformative conference in Rotterdam. The strength of our network and the collaborative spirit of our members are essential components in reshaping the digital landscape for our cities.

The “Become Better Connected” conference is organized in Rotterdam, one of the frontrunners in the digital transformation. As our physical world and our digital world are coming closer and closer together, enormous opportunities and various challenges arise. The city of Rotterdam is building an open urban platform as centerpiece of the new digital infrastructure for the Rotterdam ecosystem that will empower new ways of living, working, and playing together. In their continued exploration of the digital frontier, Rotterdam is collaborating closely together with SMEs, universities, and other members of the OASC network. Such partnerships underline the importance of inclusive, progressive, and technology-driven urban development.

During the conference, you will be introduced to a more immersive, interconnected, and dynamic way of life that will redefine the essence of our urban existence. We’re proud to present an inspiring program with a variety of speakers and perspectives, ensuring accessibility for everyone, providing an enriching experience for all who participate. During the conference we will look back on what has already been achieved, involve you in the latest developments and use cases and of course take a sneak peek into an exciting future!

The first day of the event is the Community day on January 16 that is aimed for OASC members and partners. We will also host a Networking Dinner on the 16th that will be open for all. The second day is the actual Conference Day on January 17 that is also open for all.
